Again, it's an apt name, but just because it's a safe move doesn't mean it's not a challenging one compared to your Mach 3. The next step up is the one also employed by the Mad Men blokes: the safety razor. There are tons of instructions and videos online, as well as some beautiful instruments, but in general this might be a task best left to, like, your barber. The result, though, is devastatingly close shave that just begs to get touched by your girl. The boys on the boardwalk are using straight or "cutthroat" razors - not exactly a cute name, and certainly requiring some target practice. or at least for an in-law somewhere in there. Not to jinx your wife or girlfriend, but some of my own recent discoveries are good enough to buy for yourself right now. And we ladies are certainly beginning to look at fancy accessories with an eye toward holiday gifts. Like the fellas on The Style Blog and elsewhere have been telling you lately, it's a nice time of year to be meditating on the rituals of a classic shave. And while a greasy moustache was doubtless in vogue, a well-dressed gentleman generally kept his face scrupulously shorn. Per the austere requirements of war, his hair was neat and short - there was no room for room for flouncy ponytails or wigs in the trenches, but there was still some wiggle once you got back. The 1920's were a unique moment in the comportment of an urban gentleman. And that's an important element we have yet to discuss in our recaps: grooming. But everyone remains smooth-faced, neatly coiffed, generally barbered, and altogether yummy. Needless to say folks are looking a bit more somber than usual under these circumstances, with grays and olives and browns dominating in place of Boardwalk's usual peacockery. getting drowned to death in a brutal 'rape baptism' before an entire riverside congregation. And we gasp as Agent Van Alden stalks the two-timing young agent who went from killing a witness to bludgeoning himself with a rock to proudly buying a new pair of shoes on sale to. before walking out on her life of luxury. We watch Margaret actually raise her voice at Nucky, confronting him about the murder of her husband. and that his (way too) young mother might have put him on his death bed.
We discover that Jimmy's father is none other than the Commodore. Ten weeks of nurturing these relationships in Atlantic City, and in Episode Eleven - the penultimate one in an extremely good (and extremely good-looking) season - it all comes crumbling down before us.
